Baring any change of plan, Nigeria will airlift her stranded citizens in Canada on Thursday, May 14.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Nigeria High Commission in Canada.
The Commission said it will evacuate Nigerians stranded in Canada due to coronavirus travel restrictions. Towards achieving its aim, a Boeing 777 aircraft operated by Air Peace had been arranged to fly the intending returnees home on Thursday.
The Commission said it had received no fewer than 200 requests as at the time of issuing the statement.
The plane is expected to pick the prospective passengers from two locations in Canada, namely Toronto and Alberta.
The Commission explained that it could be the only special evacuation flight for Nigerian nationals stranded in Canada due to the pandemic. On the flight schedule, the statement said the aircraft is expected to pick the first set of evacuees from the Pearson International Airport, Toronto, from where it will fly to the Calgary International Airport, Alberta, a distance of 2,915 k.m., to airlift the second set of passengers. The aircraft will depart Alberta for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where the evacuees would be moved into isolation for 14 days.
The cost of the one-way flight for each prospective evacuee was said to be between 1,130 dollars (N452,000) and 2,000 dollars (N800,000).
