Hours after his death was announced, the remains of the Chief-of-Staff to Nigeria’s President Mohammadu Buhari, Mallam Abba Kyari was buried Saturday morning at Gudu Cemetery, in Abuja.
Although the Federal Government’s policy, announced by the Minister of Communications, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, says the corpse of COVID-19 victims would not be released for burial, Kyari was an exception. His body was immediately released for a burial attended by a horde of sympathizers who disobeyed the World Health Organisation’s guidelines of social distancing and the Federal Government’s rule of not more than 10 people on such occasion.
Kyari died on Friday at a private hospital in Lagos, 25 days after he tested positive to the novel Coronavirus on March 23, following his return from Germany where he had reportedly travelled to seal a deal on power generation with Siemen.
His body was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport by senior government officials, having been flown in an air ambulance with medical personnel.
A brief prayer session was held for him at the the Defense House, Abuja.
