The Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone ‘2’ Command, Lagos, AIG Ahmed Iliyasu, on Thursday visited some strategic locations in the zone to monitor the level of compliance with the lockdown order of the federal government to curb the spread of COVID-19 in the country.
Iliyasu was accompanied on the tour by the Lagos and Ogun States police commissioners, Mr. Hakeem Odumosu and Mr. Kenneth Ebrimson.
The tour which started from the AIG’s office at Onikan, on the Lagos Island, terminated at Kara, the border settlement between Lagos and Ogun State.
Speaking with journalists at the end of the tour, Iliyasu assured the public of their safety during the period of the lockdown and beyond.
He however pleaded with members of the public to remain calm and obey the directives of government and health experts.
He noted that “the lockdown is not a punishment, rather, a necessary measure to curb the spread of the deadly virus”, adding that “it is in the best interest of everyone to cooperate with the government”.
The AIG also warned criminals who may want to take advantage of the lockdown to terrorise innocent citizens to be ready to face the wrath of the law.
While expressing gratitude to the media for the important role they are playing in the fight against the virus, he appealed to them to shun the temptation to engage in sensationalism or propagation of fake news.
